Interview with the Company

Interview with the Company

Emily Dobson | Co-Director, Choreographer, Performer

What first made you want to dance?
I was walking at one and would never sit still, so I was taken to dance and gymnastic classes to try to wear me out. I’m not sure it worked! But I was lucky to find my passion for dance at such an early age.

Favourite style of dancing?
All of them for different reasons, I love watching technical skill in action not just in dance, but in circus/gymnastics/theatre/figure skating….especially if it has a raw energy and is well performed.

Do you have a Party trick?
I can write backwards fluently. I have no idea how I learned to do it.

What’s your motto?
Be who you were meant to be, and you’ll set the world on fire

Favourite lyric or quote?
Ginger Rogers did everything Fred Astaire did, but she did it backwards and in high heels.

What skill would you love to have other than dancing?
To sing, or play a musical instrument

Dance bag must have?
Antihistamines tablets, I’m really allergic to dust!

Favourite exercise outside dance?
Swimming – pool or sea

Advice for budding dancers?
Work hard at every class/workshop/job, even if it’s not your immediate passion in dance you can learn a lot from a variety of teachers, choreographers, styles, other dancers that you work with. There’s always something to learn, you never stop.

Favourite song to dance to at the moment?
Ooooh, there’s so many…

Favourite colour?

Favourite season?
Summer, the hot ones though, not the rainy ones.

What is your favourite part of a dance class?
About three quarters of the way through, once I’ve warmed up and in my body, and then it tells me ‘right, let’s go’ and nothing else matters.

If you could have any superpower what would it be?
To fly and to breathe underwater

When was the last time you were really nervous?
Walking into a party full of friends, big crowds often make me nervous

What story does your family always tell about you?
About how I was always upside down when I was younger, cartwheeling, handstanding, hanging from the swing….

What keeps you going when times get tough?
A genuine passion and belief that art is life, and what we do as performers really contributes to change the world for the better. That, and my friends and family telling me to keep going!

What would you like people to remember about you?
I always worked my hardest and didn’t take anything for granted.

What luxury item could you not live without?
Some of my photos and postcards I’ve collected along the way, and if I could squeeze a notebook in I’d have to say that too…and a good pen!
